Yesterday in Holyrood Green pressure delivered what Councils across Scotland have been asking for – extra funding to prevent cuts, greater freedom to raise funds locally, and a vital package of long-term local tax reforms.
“Setting in motion an end to the unfair Council Tax is a huge achievement and, together with other reforms, it means councils like Glasgow can raise more money locally, like most other modern European cities," said Cllr Allan Young, co-convenor of the Green Councillors Group in Glasgow.
“We still face challenges to agree a balanced budget in Glasgow because of the extra costs of equal pay and nationally-agreed wage rises. Greens will put forward proposals to address this, whilst protecting vital local services and responding to the global climate emergency.”
“We remain concerned that at this extremely late stage there’s still been no public consultation on the city’s budget options. A year ago the administration said it would improve engagement on the city’s budget but it has failed to act, meaning once again councillors face making big budget decisions without anything like adequate consultation.”
