Greens welcome paper on Renewing Democracy Through Independence

The Scottish Greens have welcomed the publication of Renewing Democracy Through Independence, the second Scottish Government paper in the Building a New Scotland series.

Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay said:

“For far too long, Scotland has had to endure disastrous and unaccountable Tory governments that we did not vote for.”

“Devolution has made a difference but it has also served to highlight the limits of powers: from implementing the single use plastics ban to climate action and from public transport to investing in our green recovery.”

“With independence we can take our future into our own hands and do things differently. It will finally allow us to turn the page on years of cuts and austerity from Downing Street and a devastating Brexit that Scotland voted against.”

“But democracy does not stop at the Scottish Parliament’s powers. Independence is not an end in itself. It is just a beginning, and would lead to a reinvigoration of our democracy more widely and empower our communities.”
