THOUSANDS TAKING PART IN CLIMATE STRIKES
Scottish Green MSPs have praised the thousands taking part in youth climate strikes in Scotland today and called on other parties to back radical climate action.
Pupils from across the Highlands & Islands joined in to demand action, with hundreds from Kirkwall Grammar School (pictured) turning out to ensure their voices were heard.
Green MSPs Ross Greer and Patrick Harvie attended the demonstration in George Square with over 2,000 young people, while Lothian representatives Alison Johnstone and Andy Wightman joined more than 3,000 outside the Scottish Parliament and Mark Ruskell joined young people in Stirling. Demonstrations also took place from Eigg to Aberdeen.
Ross Greer MSP, the Greens' Education spokesperson, said:
“The thousands of young people who went on strike today are part of a global grassroots movement that will not stop until their messages are acted on.
“Greens stood with climate strikers all over Scotland and the world today but we have no interest in being the only ones. Politicians of all parties now need to have the moral courage to stop climate breakdown.
“We need a green jobs transformation, more ambitious targets for net zero emissions and an end to the fossil fuel age to give hope for the future. Anything else would be a dereliction of duty to those on strike today and to young people everywhere.”
