Buffer zones: Scottish Greens condemn ‘disgraceful’ stunt from ‘extreme’ Family Party

Bill has been supported by the Scottish Government as well as the British Medical Association (Scotland) and the Royal College of GPs.

Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay has condemned a “disgusting” and “disgraceful” stunt by the Scottish Family Party, which has called for its supporters to “brick up” the Sandyford clinic in Glasgow on March 11th. Gillian has reported the planned stunt to the police.

Gillian is introducing a Members Bill that would establish 150 metre safe access zones, or ‘buffer zones,’ which would stop campaigners from targeting medical facilities that provide abortion services.

Her Bill has been supported by the Scottish Government as well as the British Medical Association (Scotland) and the Royal College of GPs. Over 12,000 people filled in the Consultation about the Bill.

Gillian said:

"This is a disgraceful and disgusting new low from an increasingly extreme group that masquerades as a political party. It has no place in a kind, caring and progressive Scotland.

"They are showing a total contempt for the safety, rights and wellbeing of service users and staff. It is intimidation and harassment, and it needs to be stopped. I have contacted Police Scotland and asked them to urgently investigate.

“It also underlines exactly why we need to introduce buffer zones, to ensure that everyone can access reproductive healthcare without fear of obstruction.”
